Honorary Degree Recipients Krebs, Mu Sochua to Give Public Talks

Sir John Krebs, who is receiving an honorary degree from the University of Guelph during summer convocation next week, will give a seminar Monday, June 12, on “Is Food Safe?”
In addition, human rights advocate Mu Sochua, who will receive an honorary degree June 14 during the 10 a.m. ceremony for the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, will be the guest of honour at a June 17 event organized by U of G psychology Prof. Ian Lubek.
Kreb's talk will be at 3 p.m. in Room 103 of Rozanski Hall. The lecture is free and open to the University community and general public.
Krebs was knighted for his accomplishments as the founder of behavioural ecology. He is credited with advancing the understanding of food safety, human physiology and conservation biology. Principal of Jesus College at the University of Oxford and an Honorary Fellow of Pembroke College, he chaired the U.K. Foods Standards Agency from 2000 to 2005 and is a former chief executive of Britain's Natural Environmental Research Council.
Krebs will also give the convocation address and receive an honorary doctor of science degree June 12 during a 10 a.m. ceremony for the College of Biological Science.
Mu Sochua has been a human rights advocate speaking out against human trafficking, domestic violence and worker exploitation in Cambodia for more than 25 years. She has helped refugees in Thai border camps, was elected to Cambodia's national assembly and is the former minister of women's and veterans' affairs. In 2005, she was recognized for her efforts with a humanitarian award from the Vital Voices Foundation, co-founded by Hillary Rodham Clinton, and was a co-nominee in 2005 for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Mu Sochua will join Lubek and others at a benefit evening for women's empowerment, HIV/AIDS, violence and trafficking in Cambodia, at Hugh's Room, 2261 Dundas St. West, in Toronto. More information is available online.
The event includes musical performances and talks. Dinner starts at 6 p.m., with the program beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door, or $50 for an all-inclusive package that includes dinner and admission.
