U of G Grad Cassie Campbell Retires

University of Guelph graduate Cassie Campbell, captain of the history-making Canadian women’s hockey team, announced Wednesday that she is retiring.
Campbell is one of the most recognizable female hockey players in the world. When asked by the Calgary Sun yesterday to name her most memorable achievement, she said: “There’s so many. But my university championship in 1995 at the University of Guelph — nobody knows about that but I definitely do,” she said, before adding, “(And) obviously the two gold medals at the Olympics.”
Campbell is the only Canadian hockey player, male or female, to captain a national team to two Olympic gold medals, which she did this year in Turin, Italy, and in 2002 in Salt Lake City. The team also won an Olympic silver medal in Nagano. She has been captain of the national women’s team since 2001.
She has been a longtime supporter of U of G and names her most memorable coach as her Gryphon hockey coach, Sue Scherer. She also often talks about the friendships she made on campus that are still strong today, and how U of G gave her independence and taught her discipline.
“Cassie has been a tremendous ambassador for Canada and a wonderful role model for all aspiring female hockey players. We are proud that she is a graduate of the University of Guelph,” said Tom Kendall, director of athletics.
A 1997 sociology and nutrition graduate, Campbell played Gryphon hockey from 1992 to 1996. She was named to the OWIAA Second All-Star Team in 1992/1993, and to the 1st All-Star Team in 1996.
Her final year at U of G, she was awarded the W.F. Mitchell Award, which is presented to a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding talent and ability in a sport, as well as exceptional leadership and involvement in athletics.
Most recently, Campbell was in Guelph in March to deliver the annual “Last Lecture” to graduating students. She also held a question/answer and photograph/autograph session with students and fans.
During her tenure with the Canadian team, Campbell captured six world titles and won a total of 21 medals She currently resides in Calgary with her husband, Brad Pascall, Hockey Canada’s senior director of men's national teams, and is working on two books about hockey.
