Turfgrass Institute Turns 20, Open House Planned
August 13, 2007 - News Release
The Guelph Turfgrass Institute & Environmental Research Centre at the University of Guelph is celebrating its 20th anniversary and is holding a special open house Aug. 16 in honour of the occasion.
The free public event will run from noon to 8 p.m. and feature turfgrass and environmental research presentations, trial garden tours, flower-arranging workshops, lawn-care demonstrations and more. The event will end with a live bluegrass concert.
The institute, which was created in 1987 by U of G's Senate, functions as a three-way partnership among the Ontario turfgrass industry, the University and the province.
Research activities focus on cultural management of turfgrass and reducing chemical inputs in turf management systems.
The institute also houses a wide range of environmental and ecological research projects, including the Guelph Trial Garden. Located along the entrance to the institute, the trial garden boasts 1,400 square metres of growing space that allows gardeners to see what flowers and plants perform best in southwestern Ontario's climate. It's the only university-operated ornamental trial garden in Ontario.
More information about the open house is available online.
