The University's ringette team captured the gold at the University Challenge Cup tournament in Ottawa this month.
U of G was among 11 Canadian universities that competed in the ninth annual national competition hosted by Carleton University. There were two divisions, with Guelph winning the Tier 2 title and the University of Calgary capturing the Tier 1 title.
Guelph's ringette team became an official club team in 2007 and has 15 members.
"We just got together in September and had only played three or four games as a team before attending the tournament, so we are very proud to have done so well," said Shiona Glass, a U of G student who plays for the team. "We are looking forward to next year and hoping that our win will draw more ringette players to Guelph."
The aim of the Challenge Cup is to provide an annual opportunity for university and college teams from across the country to meet and play each other and to also raise the visibility and profile of university ringette in Canada.
Next year's tournament is scheduled to be held in Niagara Falls.
