A Joint Communication Re: Faculty Negotiations
February 08, 2008 - Campus Bulletin
This campus bulletin is intended to update you on negotiations between the University of Guelph Faculty Association (UGFA) and the University.
The faculty, librarians and veterinarians voted to unionize in 2006. Since November 2006, the two parties have been engaged in negotiations towards a first collective agreement. Bargaining has reached an impasse and the parties have agreed to mediation with an external mediator. The mediator, William Kaplan, has been appointed and the process has begun. The parties will be focused on preparing briefs to be submitted to the mediator and the other party by Feb. 19. The mediator will meet with the parties Feb. 22 and March 8 to 12.
At the mediator’s request, the University and the UGFA have agreed to a media blackout. This means there will not be any verbal, written or electronic communications, including e-mails and posting on websites, on the positions of the parties or progress of mediation, during the period Feb. 8 to March 13.
We want to assure you that both the UGFA and the University are working hard to resolve outstanding issues and are committed to the process.
We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.
Glen Filson, UGFA President and Alastair Summerlee, U of G President
