September 24, 2008 - In the News
Prof. Mary Rubio is featured on the front page of today's Globe and Mail discussing her upcoming biography on Lucy Maud Montgomery, which reveals details of the famous Canadian author's death.
In the article, Rubio talks about Montgomery's mental state in the days leading up to her death and how a note found on her bedside table by her son may not necessarily be a suicide note.
More than 30 years in the making, the retired english professor's 700-page book titled Lucy Maud Montgomery: The Gift of Wings is expected to be published sometime this fall.
Rubio is one of the pre-eminent Montgomery experts in the world, having been asked by Montgomery's son, Stuart Macdonald, to edit his mother's personal journals. Rubio and retired english professsor Elizabeth Waterson edited and published five volumes of The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery.
During her lifetime, Montgomery wrote 22 novels and 53 years' worth of personal diaries. She also kept extensive journals from the time she was 14. U of G is home to the L.M. Montgomery Collection, which includes the author's journals, scrapbooks, memorabilia, photo albums, genealogical files, legal and business papers, needle and decorative handiwork, and the Order of the British Empire medal she received in 1935, as well as original typescripts of some of her stories and other works.
