United Way Campaign Launched
September 25, 2008 - Campus Bulletin
The University of Guelph United Way committee launched its annual campaign Sept. 25 and announced a $440,000 goal.
The ambitious goal was made public at the University's traditional kick-off barbecue on Branion Plaza by United Way chair Prof. Jim Atkinson, Animal and Poultry Science, and his co-chairs, Jennifer Beehler, secretary to the chair of the Department of Clinical Studies, and undergraduate student Suba Naganathan, who is vice-president, internal, of the CME Student Association.
In a message to the campus community, U of G president Alastair Summerlee encouraged participation in the United Way campaign: "I am never prouder of this university than when I see people uniting together for a common goal, a greater good. For me, it demonstrates in a tangible way the community spirit and caring of U of G employees and students."
Summerlee is currently wearing two United Way hats — promoting the University’s fundraising effort and chairing the wider campaign for Guelph and Wellington County.
"Because the University of Guelph is a major employer in this area, the U of G community plays a vital role in the regional United Way campaign," he said. The 2008 regional campaign, which launched earlier this month, hopes to raise $2.6 million.
