U of G Gets 'In Motion'

October 07, 2008 - Campus Bulletin

U of G will participate in "In Motion" week Oct. 4 to 10, a regional campaign aimed at inspiring people to live more actively.

The University, City of Guelph, Guelph Community Health Centre, and the YMCA-YWCA of Guelph are all offering a variety of free "In Motion" activities throughout the week.

On campus, the campaign is being supported by the Health and Performance Centre, the President's Office, Athletics, Human Resources, Child Care Centre, Occupational Health, and Student Health Service/Wellness Centre.

U of G events include a team pedometer challenge where teams of five people track their steps for a week, free fitness classes, a child care walk and more.

There will be a free aquafit class from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the red pool at the Mitchell Athletics Centre. Starting at 7 p.m., intramural athletics will host a cardboard boat races.

Friday and Saturday the Athletics Centre will open its doors to the U of G and City of Guelph community. People can use the facilities and take fitness classes for free that day.

The In Motion campaign was formally launched last fall. "Our goal is to increase awareness of the importance of physical activity in our daily lives and provide opportunities for residents to be active," said Karen Armstrong, the regional co-ordinator of Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph In Motion.
