CME Student Receives Future Leader Award
November 18, 2008 - News Release
College of Management and Economics master's student Ashley van Herten is one of 10 Canadian students to receive a $5,000 Futures Fund Scholarship supported by Canada's outstanding CEO of the Year Award program.
The scholarship was established to support Canada's next generation of leaders. Recipients are chosen from 10 schools of business across the country and are selected based on academic achievements, leadership qualities and extracurricular activities.
Van Herten is completing her M.Sc. Degree in Marketing and Consumer Studies and is a co-founder of Green World Solutions, a company that develops products from 100 per cent biodegradable plastic products.
The concept grew out of a U of G class project involving van Herten and fellow commerce students Kwasi Danso and Jonathan Wolff. The trio took their business idea to a national business pitching competition last May and won second place. Green World Solutions also was recognized at the Ontario Innovation Awards, winning third place in the sustainable development category.
Van Herten will be honoured along with the other 2008 Futures Fund Scholarships winners in Calgary Wednesday. "We are extremely proud of Ashley," said David Prescott, CME associate dean. "She's an outstanding scholar, an effective social activist and a leader in the field of sustainable business."
