Shows Educate, Empower in Fight Against Violence
February 03, 2009 - Campus Bulletin
The global movement to end violence against women and girls comes to U of G this month with the return of the award-winning play The Vagina Monologues and the first Guelph performance of A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer.
Both productions are based on collections of stories and interviews about violence, sexuality and empowerment by Eve Ensler. In 1998, Ensler launched V-Day, a global non-profit movement working to generate broader attention and dialogue to end violence against women and girls, including rape, incest, battery, genital mutilation and sexual slavery. V-Day has raised more than $60 million to date for anti-violence groups through performances of Ensler’s work.
V-Day Guelph presents The Vagina Monologues Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 7 at 2 and 8 p.m. at War Memorial Hall. Performances of A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer run Feb. 27 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 28 at 2 and 8 p.m. at War Mem.
Tickets are $10 each or $15 to see both productions. Proceeds will be donated to Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis and Campus SafeWalk. Tickets are available through the Central Student Association main office (UC 274) or can be reserved by e-mailing vdayguelph@gmail.com.
