Province, U of G Celebrate Research Support

November 06, 2009 - News Release

Representatives of the Ontario government were at the University of Guelph today to celebrate a provincial investment of more than $12 million in a variety of research initiatives. The funding, which matches money provided earlier by the federal government, will be used as the final financial commitments for 21 U of G projects involving more than 200 researchers.

The visit was part of a province-wide announcement of current and past support from the Ontario Research Fund Research Infrastructure Program. In total, the provincial investment exceeds $268 million and supports 214 projects involving more than 3,300 researchers.

“I'm proud of the work that our researchers do and the wealth and jobs they create in Guelph,” said Liz Sandals, MPP for Guelph-Wellington, who was at U of G on behalf of John Milloy, minister of training, colleges and universities.

“Today’s investment will support the work of more than 200 Guelph researchers. New discoveries will continue to be made, and we want those people, those ideas and those jobs right here in our community.”

The U of G-based research projects include finding better ways to treat the spread of infectious diseases, cataloguing the world’s biodiversity, creating “green” car parts and other materials from agriculture, and studying risk factors for child-pedestrian injuries.

“Our researchers are to be commended for engaging in research that’s so relevant to society,” said Kevin Hall, vice-president (research). “The projects being supported today have the potential to really make a difference in the lives of Canadians, leading to discoveries and new technologies that will improve health, communities, the environment and our future.”
