U of G Swimmers Win Gold, Silver, Bronze at CIS Championships

University of Guelph swimmers captured three gold medals at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national swimming championships held this past weekend at the University of Toronto. They are the first CIS gold medals for the Gryphons since 2001. U of G also brought home a silver medal and two bronze medals.

Second-year psychology student Andrew Ford won two of those gold medals and a silver medal. He won his first gold in the 100-metre backstroke in an upset, finishing with a personal best time of 54.01 seconds. His second gold medal came in the 200 individual medley, which he finished with a time of 2:00.47. Ford won the silver medal in the 200 backstroke (1:56.45).

Third-year French studies major Chantique Payne won a gold medal in the 50 butterfly with a time of 27.34 and a bronze medal in the 100 butterfly (1:00.90).

Bethany Flemington, a first-year general studies student, won a bronze medal in the 50 backstroke with a time of 28.77.

Overall, both the Gryphons men’s and women’s teams placed ninth in the tournament.
