U of G Athletes Reach Finals, Garner Medals

Gryphon wrestlers nabbed three medals at the 2010 National Wrestling Championships in Calgary yesterday.
Jacob Jagas won a gold medal and was named the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Rookie of the Year after claiming the 72-kilogram crown.
His teammate Kyle Grant won silver and was named the R.W. Pugh Fair Play Award recipient after his performance in the heavyweight 130-kg division.
Rounding out the medallists was Kevin Iwasa-Madge with a bronze medal in the 65-kg weight class.
Within the team category, the Gryphon men placed sixth and the women placed 10th.
In volleyball, the Gryphon men’s volleyball team grabbed second place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship final Saturday at McMaster University in front of a contingent of loud Guelph fans.
The Gryphons were defeated 3-2 by the Queen's Gaels.
Winston Rosser was the leading hitter for Guelph with 14 kills, and Jonathan Whitton and Kevin Stewart had 11 and 10, respectively. Libero Gabriel deGroot was named player of the match for the Gryphons after recording 11 digs.
The Gryphon women’s hockey team also placed second in the OUA championships Saturday, losing 2-1 after a valiant effort against the six-time OUA champions Laurier Golden Hawks.
Erin Small picked up the Gryphons' only goal in the first period, with Emily Corbett and Jessica Zerafa getting the assists. Small was also named the Harrow Sports Canada Ltd. Player of the Game.
Gyrphon goaltender Danielle Skoufranis put on a strong performance, stopping 14 of 16 shots in the game.
The Gryphons finished the regular season with a 14-10-0 record. The Guelph team defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues in the OUA quarter-finals, then the Queen's Gaels in two straight games of the OUA semi-finals.
The 2009/-2010 women’s hockey team was honoured with two OUA all-star nominations. Dayna Kanis and Jackie Sollis were named second-team OUA all-stars.
