U of G Welcomes One-Time Enrolment Funding

April 07, 2010 - Campus Bulletin

The University of Guelph will be receiving $9.8 million in additional one-time funding from the Ontario government to help address challenges presented by increased enrolment, it was announced today.

It's part of a $155-million investment province-wide to top up post-secondary institutions as they continue to deal with the financial pressures of student growth.

Guelph MPP Liz Sandals was on campus this morning to unveil the funding. “We recognize our universities have experienced larger enrolment growth due to the increased participation rate in post-secondary education,” she said. “Today’s additional funding will help the University of Guelph continue to provide our students with a quality education.”

U of G president Alastair Summerlee said student demand for a Guelph education continues to rise. This year, Guelph received some 22,010 applications, a 4.6-per-cent increase.

“We're appreciative that the provincial government provided this one-time support despite the various economic pressures that it's facing,” he said. “We only hope that it can be sustained to help us support the growth we’ve experienced in recent years.”
