Prof to Be on CBC Radio
August 30, 2010 - In the News
Geography professor Barry Smit will be featured on the popular CBC Radio program The Current Tuesday morning. He will be part of a story on climate change and global food production.
Given the crop losses associated with extreme weather around the world this year, and the fact that 2010 is on track to be the warmest year on record, Smit was asked to discuss the implications of climate change for global food production. He will be discussing how developing countries will cope and whether Canada is expected to be a major beneficiary of a warmer climate.
The geography professor has expertise in the vulnerability and adaptations of communities and socio-economic systems to global environmental changes, especially climate change. His research has also addressed the sustainability of agriculture and agroecosystem health, and the implications of changing conditions for resources and livelihoods.
This summer, Smit represented Canada at the 2010 Federation Dialogue in Canberra, Australia, which was hosted by the Canadian High Commission. He recently served as a member of the Ontario Expert Panel on Climate Change Adaptation and was a contributing author in the report “Adapting to Climate Change in Ontario’” from the Ministry of the Environment. He has also served on the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since 1998.
Hosted by Anna Maria Tremonti, The Current airs weekdays at 8:30 a.m. on 89.1 FM.
