Student to Be on Canada AM, Prof in National News

October 22, 2010 - In the News

Demetria Jackson, communications and co-orporate affairs commissioner with the Central Student Association, will be appearing on CTV's Canada AM Monday morning to talk about the University Report Card published annually by the Globe and Mail.

The survey is based on the opinions of 38,000 current undergraduate students across Canada. Universities are awarded letter grades in numerous categories and subcategories. Universities are divided into four divisions based on enrolment — large, medium, small and very small. Guelph is in the medium category.

Last year U of G was ranked No. 1 in its division for student satisfaction and quality of education and tied for the top ranking in several key areas, including teaching, course availability, student services, food services, buildings and facilities, and campus technology.

An editorial written by Prof. Sylvain Charlebois about BHP Billiton's bid to buy Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan is featured in today's Financial Post.

The associate dean of research and graduate studies in the College of Management and Economics also appeared on CTV National News yesterday discussing the potash bid.

In the opinion piece, Charlebois discusses how this potential deal is significant for agricultural trade policy for Canada and potash.

He says the bid highlights how crucial fertilizers are to world food security. He explains that the bid could lead to a shift in Canada's approach as a world trader because BHP has shed light on how archaic the current approach is when it comes to selling commodities abroad. He also says if there is a takeover, the price of potash would probably decrease under the new regime and improve world agriculture.
