Four members of the Gryphon women's and men’s hockey teams won medals at the 25th World University Games held in Turkey this past weekend.
Jessica Zerafa, a B.Comm. tourism management student, and fourth-year student Jackie Sollis were members of the gold-medal-winning Canadian women's ice hockey team. The team defeated Finland 4-1 Saturday. Canada also won gold in 2009 when the sport made its World University Games debut in Harbin, China.
Thomas Kiriakou, a bachelor of arts student, and defenceman Tom Priamo, a B.Comm. student, were on the Canadian men’s hockey team that won a bronze medal Sunday with a 3-1 win over Kazakhstan. Gryphon head coach Shawn Kemp was an assistant coach for the team. This year marks the third consecutive podium finish for the men's team following a second-place finish in 2009 and a championship title in 2007. It was the team's seventh medal in the last eight games going back to 1997.
