Gryphons Win Silver at National Track-and-Field Championships

The University of Guelph's men's and women's teams captured silver medals at the 2011 Canadian Interuniversity Sport track-and-field championships held this weekend.

In all, the Gryphons captured 19 medals (five gold, six silver and eight bronze) during the three-day competition at Université de Sherbrooke.

The Gryphon men were led by Kyle Boorsma, who won gold medals in the 1,500m and 3,000m. He was named top male athlete at the championships.

Tim Hendry won a gold medal in the hammer throw and a silver medal in the shot put.

On the women’s side, Guelph swept the 1,500m race with Rachel Cliff winning gold; Jennie Biewald, silver; and Lydia Frost, bronze. Cliff also won a gold medal in the 3,000m.

Other medal winners are:

Silver: Alex Genest, 3,000m; Dustin McCrank, hammer throw; Guyson Kuruneri, long jump; and the women’s 800m relay team.

Bronze: Ross Proudfoot, 1,500m; Kevin Honig, triple jump; Sean Collette, long jump; Ericka Fiedler, pole vault; Rachel Aubry, 600m and 1,000m; and Courtney Laurie, 3,000m.
