U of G Maintains Maclean's Ranking

October 26, 2011 - News Release

The University of Guelph appears fourth overall and third in reputation in the annual Maclean’s magazine rankings released today.

“We’ve worked hard to preserve the quality of the Guelph educational experience, and I’m pleased that we continue to be ranked highly despite some significant challenges,” said president Alastair Summerlee.

The Maclean’s university issue will officially be released on Thursday. Besides articles about Canada’s higher education system, it will include results of two surveys: an overall ranking of institutions and a reputational survey.

Maclean’s ranks universities in three categories: medical/doctoral, primarily undergraduate and comprehensive (schools with significant research activity and a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs).

The magazine uses 13 indicators to determine overall placement within six general themes: students and classes, faculty, resources, student support, library and reputation.

U of G was ranked No. 1 in total research dollars and in library acquisitions among comprehensive universities, and third in faculty grants in the social sciences and humanities.

Top comprehensive universities this year were Simon Fraser University, the University of Victoria and the University of Waterloo.

Guelph ranked third in the magazine’s reputational survey, which ranks universities in quality, innovation, leaders of tomorrow and best overall. The reputational ranking is based on surveys of several hundred Canadians, including CEOs of major corporations, high school counsellors and academic administrators.
