The University of Guelph’s women’s rugby team captured the second Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women’s rugby title in school history on Sunday. The Gryphons beat the reigning national champions, St. Francis Xavier University, 28-0.
“This win is a result of 365 days of hard work, and I’m very proud of everything this team did to get to this point,” said head coach Colette McAuley.
“Everything we did this season led to this win,” she said. “We had several players come back for their final year to play for gold, and I know this means so much to those veterans and everyone else involved with this team.”
The Gryphons were awarded the Monilex Trophy, the top prize for the CIS Women’s Rugby Championship. The national title is the second for Guelph and the first since the inaugural tournament in 1998.
