February 13, 2012 - Campus Bulletin
It was a medal-filled weekend for the University of Guelph in the pool and on the mats during the three-day Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships.
Gryphon swimmers captured 14 medals in all — five gold, four silver and five bronze — with the women’s and men’s teams placing fifth and fourth, respectively.
On the final day, Alisha Harricharan picked up her third gold medal of the meet and broke the OUA record in the 100m butterfly with a time of 1:00.32. She improved on her bronze medal in the event from last year and broke former teammate Chantique Payne’s record. Harricharan won three individual gold medals and swam on two bronze relay teams.
On the men’s relay side, Benjamin Roberts, Matthew Stephenson, Wil Wright and Troy Baxter defended their 200m medley title with a gold-medal time of 1:42.12.
Roberts, now in third year, earned the men’s first individual gold medal of the meet in the 50m backstroke (25.65) — his second straight OUA title in the event.
In OUA wrestling, the Gryphons placed fourth overall with four gold medals, three silvers and two bronzes.
For the women, Madison Parks, named OUA women’s rookie of the year, won the 51kg weight class, and veteran Allison Leslie defended her title in the 67kg class.
On the men’s side, Jake Jagas won his third straight OUA title in the 76kg class, and fourth-year John Fitzgerald won his second straight in the 130kg.
In the men’s team event, the Gryphons were fourth with 56 points. The women’s team tallied 48 points, just two points shy of the podium.
