Rugby, Soccer Players Named Athletes of the Year

March 29, 2012 - Campus Bulletin

Women’s rugby player Jacey Murphy and Gryphon soccer player Robbie Murphy have been named the University of Guelph’s Athletes of the Year for 2011-2012. They were among student athletes honoured at the Guelph Gryphons' annual awards banquet held at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre Thursday night.

This is the second year that Jacey Murphy, a fifth-year B.Sc.(Agr.) student, has received the honour. She has been a dominant force on the Gryphon women’s rugby team throughout her career and especially this season en route to the team's Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships. She was named CIS Player of the Year and received the OUA Most Valuable Player award. She led the OUA conference with 12 tries in the five-game regular season and placed third with 60 points.

In only three seasons at Guelph, Robbie Murphy has established himself as one of the best players in Gryphon soccer history. The third-year business student captured both the OUA and CIS Player of the Year titles this season. He led the OUA with 16 goals in 14 conference games and became the Gryphons’ all-time leading scorer. He was named an OUA West All-Star for the third year in a row and made first-team All-Canadian. Murphy was also chosen to represent Canada at the 2011 FISU (International University Sports Federation) games in China.
