Gryphon Swimmers Win Medals at OUA Championships

It was a medal-filled weekend for the University of Guelph in the pool during the three-day Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships this weekend.
Gryphon swimmers captured 10 event medals in all — six gold, a silver and three bronze — and both the women’s and men’s teams placed fourth. U of G swimmers also set three provincial records during the championships, which were held in Toronto.
On the women’s side, third-year student Alisha Harricharan won three gold medals and swam on a bronze-winning relay team. She won gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly events (27.52, 1:00.22, and 2:13.80); setting an OUA record in the 100m butterfly. She won a bronze in the 400 m freestyle relay (3:53.05) with teammates Tess Wey, Sasha Boulton and Erica Pate. Harricharan was named as the 2013 female swimmer of the year for her standout performance.
On the men’s side, first-year student Evan Van Moerkerke set two OUA records and won gold in the 50 and 100m freestyle races (49.14 and 22.41, respectively). He also won the silver medal in the 100m backstroke (55.42) and was named OUA male Rookie of the Year.
Matthew Stephenson won gold in the200m breaststroke (2:17.75) and a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke (1:03.09).
Derek Quick won a bronze medal in the 1500m freestyle (15:51.52).
