Street Banners Trumpet U of G Research
March 20, 2013 - Campus Bulletin
University of Guelph research will be on public display with new street banners being installed this week along Gordon Street and Stone Road.
Each lamppost banner will bear the name and photo of one of Guelph’s 35 Canada Research Chairs (CRCs).
“We wanted to draw attention to the importance of research at Guelph and to the diverse work of our CRCs over the past 13 years,” said Kevin Hall, vice-president (research).
“Our chair holders have exceptional creative capacity that reaches across the institution. They’ve examined unexplored frontiers and have helped strengthen our research expertise. They’re also committed to sharing their discoveries and innovations, helping Guelph research make a difference in people’s lives.”
Hall said this new public outreach project will convey those impacts.
“Placing banners along two of the busiest streets in Guelph will give students, community members and visitors a glimpse of our research and a sense of the importance of the CRC program.”
The banners will remain on display until June.
The CRC program was created in 2000 to help Canadian universities attract and retain outstanding faculty. The government just announced an additional 120 chairs March 15, including two new CRCs at Guelph and the renewal of an existing chair.
Tier 1 chairs are awarded to acknowledged international leaders in their fields and are worth $200,000 a year for seven years. Tier 2 chair holders are potential world leaders in their fields and receive $100,000 a year for five years.
The CRC program was created in 2000 as a way of enabling Canadian universities to attract and retain excellent faculty. It’s overseen by Gary Goodyear, minister of state (science and technology), and governed by a steering committee made up of the presidents of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Canada Foundation for Innovation, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
