Alumni Weekend Celebrates U of G's 50th Anniversary

The University of Guelph will celebrate its 50th anniversary during Alumni Weekend June 20-22.
Events include the return of the Conversat Ball after a hiatus of nearly 40 years, a family picnic at Creelman Hall, the 140th anniversary open house of the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC), the unveiling of a Gryphon statue, and 38 reunions planned for various classes and groups.
“Alumni Weekend 2014 is poised to be one of the most widely attended and memorable events in our university's history,” said U of G Alumni Association president Brad Rooney.
“Not only does this occasion give us the opportunity to reconnect with old friends, classmates, faculty and co-workers, but it also serves to foster new relationships, based on the shared values we all hold as U of G alumni.”
Events will include class reunions, campus tours and the President’s Luncheon. Also on offer are tours of campus locations, including athletic facilities, Macdonald Institute and the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario.
Some of the events taking place Saturday include:
9 a.m., unveiling of U of G’s newly landscaped main entrance, including a custom-designed Gryphon statue;
9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Alumni hospitality tent, in front of Alumni House;
10 a.m., Biodiversity Institute of Ontario tour;
10 a.m., Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), main building tour
Noon, President’s Lunch, Creelman Hall;
2 to 4 p.m., OAC 140th anniversary open house, Johnston Hall;
3:30 p.m., Mona Campbell Animal Cancer Centre tour, OVC;
5:30 to 8 p.m., Conversat Ball gala reception and dinner, marquee tent on Johnston Green; and
8:30 p.m. – 12 a.m., Conversat evening entertainment, venues across campus.
On Sunday, an alumni family picnic will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Creelman Hall. The event will honour U of G legacy families with three or more generations of Guelph graduates.
