Wild Ontario is an experiential learning opportunity for students that also provides environmental education across the province of Ontario. We’re a long-term home for non-releasable birds of prey that can’t survive out in the wild. For University of Guelph students, it provides such an important and memorable part of their university career. They get to learn how to do animal care, animal training and also how to teach people about science. Having an opportunity like Wild Ontario on campus is completely unique. I have travelled to over 50 education programs this summer, and I think our total number of people reached for the year is now about 14,000. For the students, it’s an amazing opportunity to gain some niche experience. Beyond that, in the community, we’re able to bring these animals to children who perhaps have never seen an owl before. And in that we hope that they learn to care a bit more for nature and they get that appreciation that hopefully makes it easier to protect the nature that we still have.
