Testing requires 5 mL of serum or colostrum from the mare, and 3 mL EDTA blood from the foal.Additional Information
Neonatal isoerythrolysis is an important immunologic disease of newborn foals that results in hemolytic anemia. NI occurs after maternal alloantibodies present in the colostrum are ingested and absorbed by the foal. The alloantibodies are directed against surface antigen on the foal's erythrocytes, resulting in cell lysis, agglutination, or both. Testing needs to be pre-arranged with the clinical pathology lab. Staff overtime charges incurred due to the processing of time-sensitive samples arriving late in the day will be billed to the client.
