Animals included in the “companion/other animal” pocket-sized fee group are: pet and other captive avian species including ornamental psittacine and passerine, ornamental and racing pigeon; pet rabbit, ferret, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil, pet chinchilla, hedgehog, pet mouse, pet rat, and sugar glider; pet aquatic, small reptile, and small amphibian. All submissions must be accompanied by a completed submission form (available on the AHL website). Extra animals will be treated as separate case(s). Note Please refer to AHL LabNote 26* [3].Tips for pet bird pathology submissions to the Animal Health Laboratory. Please also refer to AHL LabNote 43* [4]. Requests for private cremation must be clearly indicated on the submission form. The timing of release of remains for private cremation is at the discretion of the pathologist (typically once all testing is completed). The AHL releases remains for private cremation only to licensed cremation service providers. A fee for handling, storage and release of remains will apply. Once the veterinary client has been notified that the remains are available for release, the onus is on the client to ensure timely pickup. Remains will be held for 1 mo following release. Due to storage limitations, remains that are not claimed will be forwarded for communal cremation. Additional fee will apply for extra documentation and images required for legal and insurance cases.
