The Canadian Wildlife Health Centre (CWHC) continues to diagnose cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) in wild birds from Ontario. The majority of positive cases over the summer have been from Northwestern Ontario, with rare cases in Southern Ontario. These positives in the Northern part of the province, along with the positive cases detected in Nunavut, are concerning as they indicates the virus is still circulating in certain wild bird populations. It is expected that as these birds begin to congregate and migrate south for the winter, case numbers will begin to increase in Southern Ontario again.
