Rhonda Weppler (based in San Francisco) and Trevor Mahovsky (
based in Toronto) have worked collaboratively since 2004. Their sculptures, essentially still life at life scale, are presented as models that are amb
iguously bracketed off from the world they depict. Generated by laborious,
drawn-out working processes, and often precariously balanced or otherwise e
phemeral, their work focuses attention upon its coming into and out of exis
tence. Their most recent work, All Night Convenience, was a 300 square-foo
t lantern mimicking a fully stocked corner store, created for the 2012 edit
ion of Toronto’s Nuit Blanche. Exhibitions include: National Gallery of Cana
da, Vancouver Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Alberta, Contemporary Art Galle
ry (Vancouver), LABoral (Gijon), Dos de Mayo (Madrid), Power Plant, Musé
e d'art contemporain de Montréal, Tokyo Wonder Site, loop-raum (Berlin),
Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, 516Arts (Albuquerque).
