Outdoor Compost Bins
Outdoor Compost Bins
Black outdoor bins play a vital role in helping capture food scraps. These bins allow for the natural decomposition of organic material and support the return of valuable nutrients to the soil. The food scraps in these bins require time and heat to mature. During the maturation process, water evaporates, and material volume decreases significantly. As a result, each composter has a remarkable capacity to divert food waste from landfill and convert it into dark, nutrient-rich soil.
Outdoor Bins Care & Maintenance
Outdoor bins can be found throughout campus. These outdoor bins are regularly cared for by our Compost Crew, which monitors for contamination, moisture, and volume.
Our Compost Crew also checks for contamination in these bins. Any items that aren't compostable are removed and disposed of properly to ensure the composting process can continue.
If there is a large amount of moisture in the bins or any odour issues, wood chips are added. Bins are regularly stirred to ensure the contents in the container are probably aerated.
All compost bins are equipped with fitted metal screens to prevent our campus wildlife from grabbing a snack.
