College of Biological Science remembers former associate dean Fred Ramprashad
The College of Biological Science is remembering Fred Ramprashad, a retired professor, former academic assistant to the dean and associate dean of the Bachelor of Science program. He passed away on Nov. 6 at the age of 84.
During his 37-year career, Fred touched the lives of many students and colleagues and made significant contributions to the University of Guelph, particularly the College of Biological Science and Athletics. He is remembered for the warmth and devotion he shared with students and colleagues, as well as his sense of humour.
In 2000, the Fred Ramprashad Scholarship was established in his honour by College of Biological Science alumni to recognize CBS students with a high academic standing who are also involved in intercollegiate athletics. In 2001, Fred was awarded a John T. Powell Award for his support of student-athletes and, in 2010, Fred was inducted into the University Sports Hall of Fame in the builder category for his many years of dedication to Gryphon athletes.
At the June 2006 convocation ceremony, Fred was named an Honorary Fellow of the university.
The reception area in the BSc Academic Counselling Centre in the Summerlee Science Complex is named after him and carries a plaque commemorating the guidance, encouragement and inspiration Fred provided to students throughout his career.
In lieu of flowers, Fred’s family is asking for donations to the scholarship in Fred’s name or to the Willow Foundation, the long-term care facility that cared for him. More information, including funeral arrangements, can be found on Fred’s memorial webpage.
