IT Governance

IT governance is a set of structured processes and committees that direct and oversee the approval and prioritization of all IT projects across the University. IT governance provides University-wide perspective on IT investment and risk assessment, while aiming to minimize duplication of effort and remaining focused on the key goals of the IT Strategy and Strategic Plan of the University.

IT Governance Council

The IT Governance Council (ITGC) is the main governing body responsible for prioritization of the University’s strategic IT initiatives.*

Membership is assigned by the Provost & Vice-President Academic, in consultation with the executive team and other University leaders.

There are four sub-committees of the ITGC that oversee specialized IT projects and investment:

  • The Academic Technologies Advisory Council provides guidance and recommendations for the use of institutional educational technologies that support teaching and learning across the University.
  • The Cyber Security Governance Committee aligns information security projects with the strategic goals of the University while providing guidance to senior leadership on important concerns relating to information security, data privacy and compliance.
  • The Data Governance Steering Committee makes recommendations to University leadership regarding data policy and guidelines, accountability and prioritization of data-related initiatives
  • The Research Computing Advisory Board is temporarily on hold and will resume in the spring of 2023.

The ITGC does not provide funding for projects. If projects are approved/prioritized by ITGC but are not yet funded, they then must go through a separate budget approval process. Those projects that require budget of $500K or more must also go through Capital Planning Committee and Physical & Digital Infrastructure Committee approval.
