The School of Computer Science's Ryan Schott and his team came in 2nd place at the recent Ryerson Social [1]xChange [1]. The event brought together students from regional universities to develop solutions that would address broad social issues and have a lasting impact in Canada.
Ryan, a 4th-year Software Engineering student shared the award with teammate Monique Chan, a 4th year Arts and Science student. The pair met in the Ideas Congress/Feeding 9 Billion classroom during the 2016 fall semester where they worked to develop solutions to address food waste. Their solution, known as Bruise Bar [2], looks at repurposing ugly fruit into smoothies and other products that would be available to students on campus.
Ryan and Monique were awarded $1,000, as well as entrance to the Social Venture Zone at Ryerson to continue developing their solution.
