How Co-op Works
Students begin their co-op placements during the second summer of their degree program. The first work term is a 4-month placement, while the second and third work terms can be taken as an 8-month placement with one employer, or two 4-month placements with different employers. Taking two 4-month placements allows students to gain a variety of experience, while the employers like the option of having a co-op student for a longer term of 8 months.
YEAR | FALL | WINTER | SUMMER |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Semester 1 | Semester 2 | Off |
2 | Semester 3 | Semester 4 | Work Term |
3 | Semester 5 | Work Term | Work Term |
4 | Semester 6 | Semester 7 | Work Term |
5 | Work Term | Semester 8 | Graduate! |
All of our co-op placements are paid work experience!
Students receive compensation from their employer for co-op work terms. The rate of pay will vary depending on a number of factors including the industry, the student’s program of study, and work term level. For your reference, a Co-operative Education Salary Guide is available on our website, which provides hourly rates (averages and ranges) for each degree program. These averages are based on jobs students held in 2019 and change yearly in response to econmic conditions.
Offers of Admission
Offers of admission are sent in three rounds:
Offer Date | How We Calculate Your Admission Average* | Estimated Cut-offs |
---|---|---|
Late January to Late February |
We use the top six completed 4U/M (or equivalent) courses, including required subjects. Where not available, we use a combination of the top six completed 4U/M and 3U/M courses, including required subjects. Should no 4U/M courses be completed, the top five 3U/M courses (including required subjects) will be used. | Offers in this round are typically made to applicants whose admission average exceeds the estimated cut-off range. |
Early March to Mid-April |
We use the top six completed 4U/M (or equivalent) courses, including required subjects. Where not available, we use a combination of the top six completed or in-progress 4U/M and completed 3U/M courses, including required subjects. | Offers in this round are typically made to applicants whose admission average is near the top of the estimated cut-off range. |
Late April to Mid-May |
We use the top six completed or in-progress 4U/M (or equivalent) courses, including required subjects. | Offers in this round are typically made to applicants whose admission average is within the estimated cut-off range. |
*required subjects are always included – see the Specific Subject Requirements for your province for more information |

What is an alternate offer?
If you don't currently meet the grade requirements for your first-choice program, we may automatically consider you for an alternate program. Don’t panic if you receive an alternate offer - we will continue to consider you for all programs that you’ve applied to (including your first choice) in our third and final round of offers.
You may receive an alternate offer if you applied for co-op. Your alternate offer will be to the non-co-op stream of the engineering program you applied to.
If you are not admitted to your first choice, you can accept your alternate offer and then work with your program counsellor once you are a student here (in the fall) to transfer to another major or apply to the co-op stream for the Winter Semester.
For more information, visit our page about alternate offers.
