Dean Named Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering

Mary Wells, dean of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Guelph, has been named a new Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE).

She was one of 59 new Fellows, including two international Fellows, inducted June 18 during the academy’s annual general meeting in Calgary.

Through the CAE, “Canada’s most distinguished and experienced engineers provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada,” according to a news release.

Called an outstanding leader and role model in engaging and supporting women in engineering, Wells joined U of G in 2017. This summer, she will complete a five-year term as chair of the Ontario Network of Women in Engineering.

Formerly associate dean of outreach and a professor in mechanical and mechatronics engineering at the University of Waterloo, she chaired a Women in Engineering committee. Along with the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers, she established a career mentoring program for women university graduates.

An award-winning professor, Wells studies the science and engineering of materials processing. She is a past president of the Metallurgy and Materials Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
