Career and Teaching Development Fellowship

About the Program

Applications are invited from doctoral students, who are passionate about teaching innovation and new pedagogies, for the Teaching and Career Development Fellowship. The Fellowship is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and tenable in the First-Year Seminar Program. Developed in cooperation with CUPE 3913, the Fellowship will provide doctoral students with the opportunity to design and deliver a First-Year Seminar. Applications will be accepted from individuals or teams of two (particularly when the team crosses the boundaries of departments and disciplines). Team teaching is expected to be synchronous and not sequential. 

The First-Year Seminar Program provides undergraduate students in their first year of study with small courses centred on active learning and student engagement. Seminars emphasize oral presentation, writing, and research methodologies in the context of interdisciplinary, collaborative and experiential learning. Seminars are focused on themes and questions of contemporary interest and provide intriguing and inter/multidisciplinary approaches. Seminars that emphasize enquiry-based or experiential learning are preferred.  

Eligibility

Students currently registered in any doctoral program at the University of Guelph.

Application Procedures: 

Applications must include the following:

1. A detailed description of the theme of the seminar, highlighting how it meets the program’s goals of interdisciplinary and active learning.
2. A detailed course outline reflecting the topics, activities and assignments, including the evaluation scheme and pedagogical goals. Applicants are urged to discuss how their proposed seminar meets the goals of the FYS program including, but not limited to, interdisciplinary, active learning and student engagement.
3. A curriculum vitae and teaching statement that reflects upon the goals and objectives of the FYS program, as well as any other documentation which demonstrates teaching experience, successes and philosophy. Please avoid including excessive numbers of individual course evaluations.
4. Names and contact information for three references. These references may include former students, instructors, colleagues or others who would be supportive of this application and who are familiar with your suitability for non-traditional teaching. These references must include at least two faculty members.
5. A note from the Chair/Director of the applicant's department indicating access to labs or office space, photocopying and other conventional resources as required for course delivery will be provided should their application be successful.

Shortlisted candidates may be requested to meet with the committee. Seminar proposals submitted by all applicants remain the intellectual property of the applicant.

Applications must be submitted to the Director of the First-Year Seminar Program by November 24, 2017 by 9:00 a.m

Term of Appointment

Two one-semester Fellowships are available for the 2018-2019 academic year. Applicants must indicate whether they wish to teach in the Fall 2018 or Winter 2019 semester.

Remuneration

This assignment will be remunerated at the rate of $7,690.36 (please know that this is subject to negotiations between the University and CUPE 3913). This position is covered by the terms of the CUPE 3913 Unit 2 Collective Agreement but does not carry a Right of First Refusal.
