Former FARE Faculty Member Honoured for Contributions to Canadian Agriculture

Dr. Larry Martin, a past professor in the University of Guelph’s Department of Agricultural Economics and Business (now the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics) has been named a Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame 2018 inductee.
Dr. Martin spent 18 years at the University of Guelph, with four of those years as department chair.
In addition to his many years as a respected professor and chair, Martin’s career has been filled with accomplishments and contributions to Canada’s agri-food sector. He was the founding executive director and later CEO of the George Morris Centre, which was Canada’s leading think tank for the farm and food sector. He was also the principal architect of CTEAM, a unique and long-standing business management course for farmers.
“No one accomplishes much alone,” he says. “My great good fortune was to have colleagues, collaborators and clients during my times at the University of Guelph, the George Morris Centre, and at Agri-food Management Excellence who set the bar high and challenged me to strive for excellence.”
Today Dr. Martin frequently consults and writes on agri-food policy, commodity markets, and strategy with a number of companies, organizations and governments.
He is currently a principal in Agri-Food Management Excellence, Inc. a management training company, and Dr. Larry Martin and Associates.
His induction in to the Canadian Agriculture Hall of Fame will accompany his many other honours received, including: Fellow of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society, the Wilson Loree Award for Excellence in Farm Business Management, the Ontario Agricultural College Alumni Award for Excellence in Research, and the Queen Elizabeth ll Diamond Jubilee Medal, which he was awarded in 2012 for his contributions to Canada.
Dr. Martin will be officially inducted in to the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Toronto during the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair on Sunday, November 4, 2018.
