60 fire wardens trained

Posted on Tuesday, November 19th, 2013

Well we have had a busy few weeks! We have trained 60 fire wardens from all across campus in the last couple of weeks are we are very happy to have them on board.  We talk about a variety of fire safety items during this training but the one that seems to resonate with every participant is extension cords! Extension cords are NEVER to be used in place of permanent wiring. We do a demonstration with a thermal imaging camera which drives home the point that they are unsafe to use for an extended period of time.  Extension cords were designed to be used to a brief period of time (we say 8 hours or less), not on a continuous basis. As well typically problem arise when the wrong gauge of cord is used for a large appliance. This can cause the cord to heat up and break down the insulation and eventually given this scenario there is a good possibility a fire will start.  Please if you use extension cords in your area have a look at alternatives, we have instructed our wardens to be on the look out for extension cords as they have the potential to cause a serious fire risk to the community.  If you would like more information on alternatives please call us at ext. 52071 or the electrical shop at ext. 52033.

Remember when the fire alarm rings evacuate! there is no such thing as a false alarm, you must evacuate when the bells ring.

Have a safe and happy week!
