Three Reasons the School of Hospitality, Food & Tourism Management Works for You
Your career
Guelph’s School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management can open doors you probably didn’t even know existed. Since 1969, our graduates – over 5000 and growing – hold managerial and leadership positions throughout the world.
Your classes
We set high expectations in our classes. Here are some of them:
- Expect us to know your name. Unlike some of our big city competitors, we’re a small School. With an incoming class size of approximately 120 students, we can tailor our classes to your learning needs, interests and career goals.
- Expect to be challenged…not just inside the classroom but also outside it. Experiential learning is a key theme throughout our curriculum. That means your learning opportunities extend beyond the walls of the conventional classroom: co-op opportunities, majors that allows you to be paid while you learn; independent study courses that target your interests and take you into the broader community; semester-long exchange programs with universities in Britain, Austria, Scandinavia, Mexico and Australia; and hands-on management experience through working in our student-run restaurant.
- Expect to become an industry professional. Our School produces leaders – and leaders need a balanced knowledge of practice and theory. Our courses focus on providing that balance: the case study approach means you’ll learn about managerial and leadership principles through tackling real-life industry challenges; our emphasis on industry networking (Job Expo, Networking Night, PAB, Exec-in Residence) means you’ll have opportunities to connect with the top professionals in your field; and our faculty of award-winning researchers and teachers means you’ll be able to draw on their own industry experience to help you learn.
Your community
Joining our School means becoming part of a community that fosters your academic, professional and personal growth.
Academically, you’re joining University of Guelph, with its rich international reputation and its acclaim as one of the top comprehensive universities in Canada.

And personally you’re becoming part of a close-knit community: extra-curricular activities, including the School’s student association; a beautiful campus, noted for its “greenness”, friendliness – and good food; and opportunities to make a positive difference. Our School has a history of contributing to the larger community, of getting involved, and of giving back. It strengthens our community spirit – and our students’ leadership skills.
