Hospitality and Tourism Management Co-op
You need a job to get experience. You need experience to get a job.
Make connections, gain work experience and enhance your post-graduation employability with Co-operative Education.
Why should I consider co-op?
Our co-op students are among the most highly sought after with a posting ratio of three jobs to every student available. Many students have more successful job searches after graduation, receive higher starting salaries and secure full-time jobs with co-op employers.
Co-op students also:
- Gain relevant, paid work experience
- Build resumes and portfolios
- Network with employers and create strong work references
- Strengthen job interview skills
- Develop a stronger understanding of future career goals
When would I be working during my degree?
The co-op program consists of one twelve-month work period that begins at the end your second year and extends from May to April (for example May 2024 to April 2025).
Where would I work?
Where you work during your co-op term depends on job availability. Co-op employers include Delta Hotels and Resorts, Oliver & Bonacini Restaurants, SIR Corp, Marriott Hotels, COBS Bread and many more.
What kind of jobs have students held in the past?
This is a small sample of job titles held by our students:
- Front of house manager
- Guest services agent
- Management trainee
- Food and beverage division intern
- Hospitality supervisor
- Food and beverage, wedding and banquet supervisor
What is a typical job like?
Students become active, contributing members in their workplace, many taking on leadership and supervisory roles. They typically rotate through various departments to learn different operations, connecting theoretical knowledge and practical experience. These operations can include: finance, sales and marketing, rooms, front desk, spa, event planning, night audit and restaurant operations.
I’ve never competed for a job before. What support is available?
Co-operative Education & Career Services provides support for co-op students through workshops and one-on-one advising. All students complete COOP*1100, a mandatory one semester non-credit course that prepares students for their job search and success in the workplace. Students also connect with a co-op co-ordinator and co-op faculty advisor who assist students during the employment process and throughout the work term.
What is the job competition process like?
Students engage in a competitive employment process in January of their second year of studies. Co-operative Education & Careers Services posts co-op jobs specifically for students through recruitguelph.ca. The majority of employers come on campus to interview students and then follow up with job offers through the website.
How do I enroll?
Students applying directly from high school must have at least an 80% average in appropriate subjects. In-course students applying for admission in their second semester are required to have a minimum 70% cumulative average. For further details, please refer to the Undergraduate Calendar.
