April 27: Marketing and Consumer Studies Professor Named AABS Emerging Scholar

Associate Professor Brent McKenzie was presented with the 2010 Emerging Scholars Award by the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS).  The award was used to finance his travel to Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius to conduct field research about Dark Tourism. The field studies in Estonia included interviews with owners of a firm that provides Soviet Tours in Tallinn; an interview with a tour guide who conducts Soviet Tours in Tallinn; and an interview with a representative of the Tallinn tourism bureau.

2011 Hornblower Magazine Available Online

A team of students, Katie Buchanan, Ksenia Em, Laura Milton, and Gillian Sanger, from the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management has produced the 2011 Hornblower magazine. The Hornblower features articles about the hospitality and tourism industries worldwide, as well as updates from within the School and a listing of graduating students. The 2011 magazine can be viewed online and will also be distributed as a print version at Convocation in June and in classes in September. The tradition of the Hornblower started in 1973.

April 18: Marketing Professor Comments on Campaign Signs

Branding and packaging expert Tim Dewhirst, a faculty member in the Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies, discusses how the use of colour on election signs is used to build political brands and win votes.  His comments can be found in the Guelph Mercury

April 14: U of G Hosts Talk by Economist

Economist Marie Claire Villeval will discuss “From Freakonomics to Neuroeconomics: The Role of Incentives” at the University of Guelph April 19. Hosted by the College of Management and Economics, her talk will take place in Room 300 of the Macdonald Institute at 3 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

April 11: MBA Alumni Creating Sustainable Food Sources in the Southern Sudan

University of Guelph MBA graduate Robert Boyer puts his love of agriculture together with a shrewd business sense to bring a much-needed harvest to struggling communities in Southern Sudan. As Chairman of the Jebel Lado Project, an initiative of the Canadian Economic Development Assistance for Southern Sudan (CEDASS), Boyer leads a team of dedicated Canadians working to develop the first mechanized farm in the region.

April 8: CME Staff Member Returns to Nepal

When it was announced that Frebis Hoffmeyer, Assistant B.Comm. Program Counsellor in the College of Management and Economics, would be a Leave for Change volunteer from the University of Guelph, Raja Khanal was one of the first people to contact her. The two had never met, but Raja, an expatriate Nepali engaged in PhD studies at the University of Guelph, was offering his support to help Frebis prepare for her volunteer assignment in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. That was in 2007.

April 6: Department of Economics Gets a New Name

The Department of Economics has a new name. The University of Guelph Senate voted Monday to change the name to the Department of Economics and Finance. Chair John Livernois says the name change more accurately reflects the teaching and research that are done in the Department. It’s also important for the public profile of the College of Management and Economics (CME), he says. CME houses business-related programs, and finance is one of the major fields of study at any business school.

April 5: Winner of the Course Evaluation Campaign Announced

The College of Management and Economics, with significant help from the College of Management and Economics Student Association (CMESA), recently completed a successful campaign to raise awareness about the importance of course evaluations and provide students with an opportunity to complete them. Approximately 200 students participated in the campaign and had their names entered in to a draw for an iPad 2.   The lucky winner was BComm (Accounting) student Monica Bassilious.
