CBESA president Moe Yassin looks forward to exciting year for U of G's business students

Mohammad Yassin has always understood the importance of pursuing post-secondary education and came to the University of Guelph focused on studying accounting and later earning his CPA designation. But before he achieves his dream of becoming a forensic accountant, he has a large task ahead of him as the College of Business and Economics Students’ Association (CBESA) president. Learn more in Moe’s Q&A about his experience as a U of G business student and what he’s most looking forward to this academic year.

Why did you choose to pursue your Bachelor of Commerce in accounting at the University of Guelph?

I chose to attend the University of Guelph because my brother, who was attending the University a year before me, invited me to campus a few times. Seeing how beautiful and comforting the campus is made me fall in love with this place. I also heard that the College of Business and Economics had been experiencing growth, and I simply wanted to be a part of this growth.

What has been your favourite part of the accounting major at U of G so far?

My favourite part of the accounting major at the University of Guelph has to be the support that the students have for each other and the support offered by the faculty within the Department of Management. The courses I have taken so far have provided me with a solid base for accounting and reassurance that this is the major I am truly passionate about.

As president of CBESA, you have a busy year ahead of you. What are you most looking forward to?

I would say that I am most looking forward to all of the events and opportunities that we have planned for ALL business students at the University of Guelph. We are currently members of the Canadian Association of Business Students, which gives us access to Jeux du Commerce Central, a nation-wide business case competition. Last year, we were able to partner with another organization, Regroupement Étudiant des Facultés d'Administration de l'Est du Canada, which gives us access to four more top calibre business case competitions, including; Happening Marketing, Finance Open, HR symposium, and Jeux du Commerce.

What has been your most memorable moment so far as a student leader?

Within the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with like-minded students who are passionate about making a difference in their business program. Being a part of a strong team that I have had the chance to lead and produce amazing events with has been a great experience.

What advice do you have for students looking to get involved at U of G?

If you are looking to get involved, start EARLY, right in your first year! There are many ways to get involved within the College of Business on the CBESA, our Accredited Student Organization’s (ASO’s), or our affiliate groups. If you have an interest related to business that is not yet represented by a group, don’t hesitate to reach out to me about introducing a new group to be affiliated with the CBESA!
