Research with Impact
Lang Research Chairs ($3M).
To advance academic research across the domains of business and economics, Lang aims to establish three Research Chairs, each highly specialized in a particular field of relevance to industry, to develop internationally recognized research, teaching programs that explore global linkages, innovative methods, advanced theory and substantially contribute to knowledge sharing. Additionally, the Chairs will help attract and train graduate students at the masters and PhD levels. We are looking to raise $3M per position to create Research Chairs within the following fields:
- International Entrepreneurship
- Global Economics
- Marketing Analytics
International Institute for Sport Business and Leadership ($5M)
The newly established International Institute for Sport Business and Leadership (IISBL) is building its reputation as the intellectual home of sport business research in Canada, and the choice of graduate students, media organizations and international thought leaders. Richard Pound, former VP of the International Olympic Committee, is Chair of the IISBL Advisory Board, with representation across Canada’s leading sport associations, agencies and professional organizations. Lang is working with the Canadian Olympic Foundation to raise $5M in support of research in sport and business leadership, including graduate student funding to help build the next generation of sport leaders for Canada.
Marketing Analytics Centre ($3.5M)
Lang’s Marketing Analytics Centre (MAC) is dedicated to the advancement of business analytics to support marketing strategy. We are looking to align researchers with MAC as Fellows in Business Analytics, Post-doctoral Students, and PhD Graduate Research Assistants focused on analytics defined by the MAC Director and Fellows. Additionally, funds will support conference grants and travel bursaries, bi-annual analytics research awards for best thesis, visiting expert/scholar, development of curriculum at the graduate and undergraduate level, bi-annual industry engagement award, and administrative support. Further, there is a need for capital enhancements in the form of space refurbishment and technology upgrades.
Lang Research Fellowships
To advance business and economic research with impact, Lang would like to establish a named Fellowship Endowment Fund to support faculty research and graduate study in business and economics.
Active Learning
Centre for Teaching Excellence and Learning Enhancement
The Centre will specialize in teaching and learning excellence; help facilitate and coordinate active learning and high-quality learning experiences core to Lang’s mission and strategic plan. The development of a Centre reflects Lang’s commitment to deliver and develop high-quality business education, and establishes a Society of Excellence to recognize exceptional student achievement. It will enhance existing initiatives, as well as new strategic partnerships and programs. Examples: certificates and workshops; teaching awards for excellence; a transformational learning initiatives fund for professional development opportunities and research of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning; and, a comprehensive assessment of our programs to improve the student learning experience.
Endowment for Grad Students ($10M).
Business at Guelph is not like other business schools. Expertise in accounting, food, real estate, hospitality, management and tourism, all focus on using business as a force for good. This makes the Lang School of Business an excellent choice for graduate studies. Lang wants to grow its graduate programs by creating a $10M endowment, offering increased support to students looking to make a difference in the world.
Experiential Learning Fund ($100,000)
The Lang student opportunity fund supports students to participate in conferences, case competitions, industry networking events and other opportunities beyond the classroom. Potential naming opportunity for specific student awards, and for competitions. Needs across Lang, and to specifically support students in the John F. Wood Centre for Business & Student Enterprise.
Food and Beverage Program Development ($100,000+)
Proposed curriculum would address the theoretical and practical requirements of retail, distribution, marketing and management of operations in the global food and beverage industries. Specifically, a Business of Wine program would meet student needs and bridge a critical industry gap ($100,000). With the approved development of a state-of-the-art multi-functional 'Food Studio' featuring professional-quality audio-visual equipment at Lang, there is also opportunity to name a Business of Food speaker series ($150,000).
Business Sustainability
Lang Chair in Sustainable Tourism ($3M)
The Lang Chair in Sustainable Tourism will support the advancement of tourism through a deeper understanding of current industry challenges critical to its future sustainability. The Chair will have a broad and continuing commitment to the discipline, primarily engaging in research, but also teaching in the undergraduate and graduate programs and curriculum development, stakeholder outreach, advocacy and service.
Institute for Sustainable Organizations
Lang is committed to establishing an Institute in Sustainable Organizations (ISO) to inspire and develop leaders for a sustainable world, who will use business as a tool to improve the essential elements of life – water, food, natural environment, health, well-being, community, culture and learning. The ISO will support the advancement of research, education and community engagement through collaborative initiatives for positive impact.
Lang Sustainability Conference
The Lang Sustainability Conference aims to be Canada’s hub of business leaders for a sustainable world. It is an intensive 3-day conference hosted by the Lang Students' Association at the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics each November. It is designed to bring together 100+ of Canada's brightest students to engage in workshops, discussion and competition to explore business solutions to the current social, environmental and economic challenges facing our world. Each day of the conference is themed after a different element of the triple bottom line: Planet, People and Profit.
Lang Plaza Bike Shelter ($350,000)
As part of the transformational gift from the Lang family to the School is the development of a soon-to-be campus landmark, Lang Plaza. The Plaza will surround the entrance to Macdonald Hall with new plantings, walkways, benches and noteworthy features such as a fountain and a firepit. To align with the School’s sustainable focus, space is reserved for a named bike shelter. Not only will the shelter promote an environmentally friendly mode of transport, but will feature a green roof, and impactful messaging of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Community Engagement
Lang Knowledge Exchange Chairs ($1.2M).
To further advance business knowledge and practise, Lang aims to establish a series of unique Knowledge Exchange Chairs. Unlike traditional research Chairs, these positions seek donor and industry support for faculty with expertise in a variety of fields who bring insights and analysis to address emerging issues and mobilize knowledge in a manner that informs policy and practise. For this initiative, $1,200,000 per chair needs to be raised. We are looking to create Chairs in the following fields:
- Food Services
- Global Finance
- Lodging
- Real Estate
- Sales Excellence
- Sport Management
Real Estate Alliance ($750,000)
The Real Estate Alliance will support student training in advanced methods of analysis and will work with industry to expose students to issues which are currently challenging the sector. The goal of the Alliance is outreach and engagement, and to have one point of contact for any inquiry about real estate. The Alliance will be a catalyst for greater interaction of the industry with students, supporting recruitment efforts and raising awareness of corporate profiles with students and alumni.
International Institute for Entrepreneurship ($2M)
This investment will allow Lang to advance our entrepreneurship programs through student exchanges and collaborations with partner institutions, stakeholder outreach and research. The institute will support our entrepreneurship faculty through experiential learning, industry collaboration, and more. Target: $2M
Student Event Sponsorship (~$100,000/yr)
Every year, Lang students host a variety of events, bringing together students, faculty, staff and alumni, which requires sponsorship in order to execute events on an annual basis. These events offer a variety of opportunities for students, alumni and the business community to network, re-connect and boost the affinity felt towards the university. In most cases, funds raised support the events as well as experiential learning opportunities for student initiatives like off-campus case competitions and conferences. Examples of events requiring sponsorship:
- Undergraduate Real Estate Case Competition (~$45,000)
- Great Ethical Dilemma (~$7,500)
- Management 4000 Capstone Project (~$10,000 - $5k/semester)
- Department of Management Datathon event (~$5,000)
- John F. Wood Centre for Business and Student Enterprise events (~$25,000)
- Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management Career Night – ($2,500)
- Real Estate and Housing Alumni Golf Tournament (~$10,000)
- Lang Plaza Grand Opening 2021 ($50,000)
