2016 SSHRC GRANT - Grant to study the career launch process in today's generation of emerging adults.

2008 SSHRC GRANT - Grant to study how different generational cohorts progress through their careers, what their expectations are and how these experiences and expectations vary by cultural background, gender and region ($158,400).

Dr. Sean Lyons is Professor and Associate Dean of Research & Graduate Studies at Lang. His research focuses on inter-generational dynamics and their impact on workplace environments and management practices.

His recent co-authored study, "Career Expectations of International and Domestic Students in Canada," published in the International Journal for Educational Guidance, examines the career expectations of international and domestic students in Canadian universities. This research, involving a dataset of 23,950 students, including 3,020 international students, aims to understand the varying career-related needs and expectations of these two groups. The findings reveal both similarities and differences in expectations, offering valuable insights for higher education institutions to attract and retain high-quality international students. The study underscores the importance of tailoring career support services to meet the diverse expectations of international students, enhancing their educational experience and career prospects.

In his other 2023 paper, "Career Sustainability: Framing the Past to Adapt in the Present for a Sustainable Future," published in Sustainability, Dr. Lyons and his colleagues explore the concept of sustainable careers. The research posits that career development is an adaptive and dynamic process of creating person-career fit, aiming for a career that is happy, healthy, and productive. The paper delves into the intrapersonal processes involved in constructing career sustainability, drawing on theories such as career construction theory, prospective and adaptive sensemaking, conservation of resources theory, and career adaptability. His study articulates how individuals reflect, frame, envision, re-frame, and adapt their career paths over time, bringing added conceptual depth to earlier sustainable careers models.

Dr. Lyons's work advances our understanding of the evolving career landscape, providing insights for fostering adaptable and sustainable career paths in a rapidly changing world.
