Institute for Sustainable Commerce at Guelph

Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through world-class academics and research.

Housed within the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics, the ISCG supports and advances research and curriculum innovations related to business sustainability, corporate social responsibility and circular economy innovations. The Institute acts as a hub for the generation of new research and dissemination of knowledge while being collaborative and inclusive.

The Lang School is committed to inspiring and developing leaders to use business as a force for good. As a Champion of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education, Lang aims to better understand what corporate social responsibility and sustainability mean within the context of business and what students can do to become leaders who inspire change and contribute to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

The Institute aims to:

  • Facilitate, develop, strengthen, and promote business sustainability related research
  • Increase collaboration for business sustainability-related research, teaching and engagement 
  • Integrate business sustainability and SDG research and applied knowledge into undergraduate and graduate programming and co-curricular activities
  • Increase business sustainability related knowledge mobilization activities
  • Fund research for business sustainability related research, training of student researchers in business sustainability research, increase industry related applied projects and sustainable development topics.
  • Generate and promote applied research to help our industry stakeholders achieve their corporate sustainability goals.
  • Build a robust global reputation for scholarship in business sustainability for Lang
  • Apply emerging knowledge from research and practice to incorporate sustainability practices into operations

University of Guelph Research Centres:

 

Arrell Food Institute

The Arrell Food Institute at the University of Guelph exists to elevate food to improve life, bringing people together to conduct research, train the next generation of food leaders and shape social, industrial and governmental decisions, always ensuring food is the central priority. Research topics include culture, health, environment, safety, food security and technology. Lang Professor Simon Somogyi is the Arrell Food Institute’s Arrell Chair in the Business of Food

 

Centre for Advancing Responsible and Ethical Artificial Intelligence (CARE-AI)

The Mission of CARE-AI is to advance multidisciplinary AI training and research, and its responsible application to foster economic growth and improve life. Multiple Lang faculty members are members of CARE-AI

 

Community Engaged Scholarship Institute (CESI)

The Community Engaged Scholarship Institute (CESI) brings together community and campus skills and resources in order to advance community-identified research goals. CESI works to develop, implement and support evidence-informed, rigorous practices of: Critical community-engaged scholarship; Community engaged teaching and learning; and Knowledge mobilization.

 

Guelph Institute for Development Studies

GIDS provides undergraduate and graduate education, research and analysis related to development in Canada and internationally. The mandate of the Institute is to promote positive and inclusive change in the world towards social justice for all.

 

Guelph Institute for Environmental Research (GIER)

GIER facilitates interdisciplinary research about the environment through a number of thematic working groups related to various environmental issues. The Institute facilitates research projects and the dissemination of knowledge through conferences and reports. A Lang faculty member serves on the GIER Governance Committee

 

India Research Centre (IRC)

The India Research Centre (IRC) at the University of Guelph aims to promote research on issues in India and the Indian diaspora. The Centre will create an intellectually stimulating environment to encourage learning and research on India and the Indian diaspora, to enhance diversity and inclusion, and to facilitate research partnerships between researchers and community-based organizations. Lang faculty are represented on the IRC Working Group

 

Live Work Well Research Centre

Lang faculty have a long history of involvement with the Live Work Well Research Centre (formerly the Centre for Families Work and Wellbeing) as researchers and as members of its Management Board. This Centre is focused on research that promotes family and individual well-being, responsive workplaces, and sustainable communities.

 

One Health Institute (OHI)

One Health is the collaborative effort of multiple disciplines working on complex challenges at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health. The mission of the One Health Institute is to enhance and promote academic, research and outreach programs to propel the University of Guelph to the forefront of One Health scholarship internationally. Lang faculty are represented on the OHI Advisory Board.
