Uhmikwahdeze "The Beaver" is a sculpture in front of the Indigenous Student Centre.
About the sculpture:
Outdoor Sculpture: Uhmikwahdeze (2010)
Mary Anne's work examines environmental concerns and Indigenous culture through the use of animal imagery - wolves, ravens, moose, and beaver are juxtaposed against a diversity of background situations.
Mary Anne graduated with Honours from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and her work has exhibited widely across Canada. The beaver is an important icon in Barkhouse's work as it is a distinctly Canadian emblem of industry, an example of nature's ability to persevere in the face of adversity.
The beaver in front of the Indigenous Student Centre was installed in 2010 and has a partner sculpture: "Colony" (2007) located in the Sculpture Park at the Art Gallery of Guelph on the north end of campus.
