Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics
Summary:

After obtaining my MSc and PhD at Kiel University in Germany, I worked as a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Policy and Market Research at the University of Giessen in Germany. In September 2005, my family and me moved to Canada where I joined the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics. My research interests are in three areas:

  • Novel food and agricultural technologies: Consumer perception, information search and decision making
  • Economics of traceability throughout the food and agricultural supply chain
  • Challenges and best practices in communication about novel technologies, in particular agricultural biotechnology

With regards to methodology, I primarily employ survey research and the in-depth case study approach.

Where possible, I like to involve undergraduate students in research projects in these areas, for example in conducting a media analysis of reports on GMO foods (foods containing genetically modified organisms). As undergraduate coordinator I am also in charge of the department's liaison activities, on and off campus to reach out to interested high school students, as well advising undergraduate students on academic matters, such as course selection and international exchanges.

1993 Dipl. Ing. agr. (MSc in Agricultural Economics), Kiel University, Germany
1996 Dr. sc. agr. (PhD in Agricultural and Food Economics), Kiel University, Germany
