About
Heather Bailey was always certain she would have a career involving animals. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture majoring in animal science, she spent one year in a position as a teaching assistant at the University of Waterloo. She returned to her alma mater, taking on a similar position in OAC’s Department of Animal & Poultry Science in 1983.
“I am proud to be an OAC Alumni and enjoy working as part of the OAC team of staff, faculty and students. I know from firsthand experience that OAC students are some of the most active, involved, organized and energetic students at the University of Guelph.” – Heather Bailey
Heather is a teaching associate in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science, but also plays a critical role in the management of teaching and research animals on campus. She is also involved with the challenging task of coordinating the teaching schedule for the department.
As for her teaching, she has really enjoyed being the coordinator of the distance education version of the Animal Care and Welfare course. Students are challenged to look at animals differently and encouraged to find solutions to production problems that benefit the animals as well as producers. Heather is also involved in the laboratories for the Animal Nutrition course. This large undergraduate course allows students to learn by giving them “hands on” experience with pigs and cows. Heather balances teaching and supervising the students with managing the health and welfare of the animals involved.
Heather is also instrumental in the annual College Royal event on campus. Heather is an advisor to the College Royal committee, especially for all aspects that involve the use of animals. She coordinates the care of the livestock for the Livestock Show as well as the animals at Old MacDonald’s Farm; a top attraction of the weekend.
Heather was a recipient of a 2014 President’s Award for Exemplary Staff Service; receiving the Community Service Award. Heather is a deserving recipient for her volunteer work with College Royal, the United Way and the Canadian Federation of University Women.
