Accreditation

The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) has been accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) Council on Education (COE) since 1920. Normally every seven years, all accredited veterinary schools undergo an assessment by the COE. Following an accreditation site visit in October 2022, OVC was granted continued Accreditation with minor deficiencies. A minor deficiency has minimal or no effect on student learning or safety.

In April 2023, the COE provided these directives for correction of the deficiencies: Standard 3 - The flooring in the Large Animal Hospital must be repaired to provide surfaces that will allow secure footing which can be readily disinfected.

Standard 4 - The College must provide clinical opportunities for equine ambulatory care in client-owned horses, through a college or privately-operated service.

During its September 2024 meeting, the COE reviewed OVC’s progress in addressing these deficiencies by considering the report and supporting documentation that OVC had provided to them. While OVC has made progress in correcting the issues, there is still work required to correct these minor deficiencies. Since all deficiencies noted in the COE’s April 2023 report were not corrected by April 2024, OVC has now been placed on Probationary Accreditation until April 2025.

Probationary accreditation is not an adverse decision and does not affect the degree status or ability for students and graduates to be licensed.

Progress reports on the continued actions we are taking to correct the deficiencies are required by the COE twice a year, the first being in the annual interim report in December. If we are able to provide evidence that the deficiencies have been corrected by April 14, 2025, the COE may grant OVC an Accredited status for up to the remainder of the accreditation cycle to 2029.

The College and the University are addressing the regaining of full Accreditation as an extremely high priority. While still ensuring clients and patients have access to veterinary care, work has been underway to repair flooring in the Large Animal Hospital to ensure surfaces allow for secure footing and appropriate disinfection. The Large Animal Breezeway is currently under reconstruction, and the remaining areas will follow. Work is currently underway to hire into an Equine Ambulatory Medicine position. OVC will continue to update the COE with required additional reporting on these and other actions that will address the deficiencies.

Already showing on our OVC website is our NAVLE performance (it is noteworthy that we maintain a high pass rate post-covid, unlike many other schools):
